Grounds Superintendent : Pippy Park Golf

Pippy Park Golf Course is a challenging 27-hole public golf course situated in the heart of the City of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.  Named Golf Course of the Year for 2022 by Golf NL, PPGC features a pro shop, golfer's lounge, on-course snack bar, and banquet facility with the best view of the city.

Job Summary
Reporting to the General Manager, the Grounds Superintendent supervises and manages the outside workers, assists with the day-to-day maintenance of the grounds including fairways, greens, tee boxes, bunkers, irrigation system, and gen-eral landscaping around the two golf courses and the clubhouse; this includes the pump house, Quonset huts, and course restrooms (restrooms are a shared respon-sibility with the Pro Shop staff).
Responsibilities
  • Develops a maintenance program for the golf course to ensure first-class conditioning of the course and surrounding grounds
  • Has input into our Golf Course Strategic Plan
  • Inspects both courses daily for potential problems
  • Maintains accurate inventory records and controls to ensure appropriate levels of inventory are maintained (soil, sand, cart parts, signs, fuel)
  • Supervises and participates in the daily and seasonal maintenance of fairways, greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation systems, and cart paths
  • Creates a fertilizer and chemical application schedules
  • Develops and keeps current a map of the irrigation system for both golf courses and ensures that the systems are maintained in an operable manner
  • Prepares staff schedules, assigns work, supervises, and trains maintenance workers while following the Collective Agreement
  • Provides instruction in safe work practices and the safe use of equipment
  • Supports and enforces the work safety program, the Harassment Prevention Plan, and OHS legislation
  • Maintains records of attendance, hours of work, approved time off, and related work assignments
  • Ensures work areas are kept organized and tools are stored properly
  • Exercises cost control measures to ensure operating and capital expenses are in line with approved budgets
  • Assumes operational and maintenance responsibility for the Cart Fleet and other equipment
  • Works cooperatively with the Pro Shop/Starter and Food/Beverage supervisors
  • Provides monthly updates to the Board of Directors
Qualifications
  • A degree or diploma in Turf Management and Agronomy or a related field with experience in greens keeping (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Must hold a valid Pesticide license or be willing to acquire
  • Able to work flexible hours
  • Bring a positive attitude and high energy to the workplace
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver's license
  • Must provide a valid “Certificate of Good Conduct" from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Familiarity in working in a unionized environment
