The St. Thomas Golf & Country Club (the “Club”) was established in 1899 and enjoys a reputation as an exceptional golf course and player’s club. Over the past decade, the Club has advanced steadily in the SCORE Golf rankings and was recognized as the 43rd best golf course in Canada in 2022. Among other competitive events, the Club has played host to the prestigious Early Bird tournament since 1949, with champions including Mike Weir and Moe Norman.

The membership has approved the construction of a new clubhouse over the next several years. The coming years are likely to be an exciting and pivotal time in the Club’s unique history and evolution as one of the finest clubs in Canada.

Job Summary
The General Manager / Director of Club Operations (title to be confirmed) of the Club (“GM”) is the leader of the Club’s management team and is responsible for managing all facets of the Club’s operations. The GM manages the affairs, and directs the employees of the Club, subject to and in accordance with the direction of the Board of Directors (the “Board”) acting through the President, who shall exercise supervisory authority over the GM. The GM shall attend all meetings of the Board and, as appropriate, shall be an ex-officio member (i.e., non-voting member) of Board committees.
Responsibilities

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the follow:

  • Implements general policies established by the Board of Directors; directs their administration and execution. Plans, develops and approves specific operational policies, programs, procedures and methods in concert with general policies.
  • Develops and co-ordinates the development of the Club's long range and annual business plans, including but not limited to budgets in respect thereof.
  • Develops, maintains and administers a sound organizational plan; initiates improvements as necessary.
  • Establishes a basic personnel policy; initiates and monitors policies relating to personnel actions and training and professional development programs
  • Supervises all personnel functions, including decisions, within the Club Facility, including but not limited to hiring, discipline, and discharge of employees.
  • Maintains membership with the CSCM and other professional associations. Attends conferences, workshops and meetings to keep abreast of current information and developments in the field.
  • Preparation and development of operating and capital budgets according to the fiscal calendar; monitors monthly and other financial statements for the Club; takes effective action as required. Undertakes budget audits to ensure the Club's expenses are comparable with other Clubs with similar operation and facilities.
  • Coordinates and serves as ex-officio member of appropriate Club committees.
  • Welcomes new Club Members; "meets and greets" all Club Members as practical during their visits to the Club.
  • Provides advice and recommendations to the Board of Directors via the President and committees about construction, alterations, maintenance, materials, supplies, equipment, and services not provided in approved plans and/or budgets.
  • Consistently assures that the Club is operated in accordance with all applicable local, provincial, and federal laws.
  • Oversees the care, maintenance, security and risk management of all the Club's physical assets and facilities.
  • Coordinates the marketing and membership relations programs to promote the Club's services and facilities to potential and present members.
  • Ensures the highest standards for food, beverage, sports and recreation, entertainment, and other Club services.
  • Reviews and initiates programs to provide members with a variety of popular events.
  • Analyzes financial statements, manages cash flow and establishes controls to safeguard funds. Reviews income and costs relative to goals; takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Works with subordinate department heads to schedule, supervise and direct the work of all employees.
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Directors.
  • Participates in outside activities that are judged as appropriate and approved by the President to enhance the prestige of the Club; broadens the scope of the Club's operation by fulfilling the public obligations of the Club as a participating member of the community.

The GM will maintain direct reporting relationships with the following managers:

  1. Head Golf Professional
  2. Superintendent
  3. Executive Chef
  4. House and Membership Experience Manager
  5. Manager of Accounting and Office Administration
Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Visionary leadership skills, ability to garner respect and represent the Club with pride in support of our brand
  • Proven track record as a General Manager (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience
  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivation of employees
  • Strong computer and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge in a variety of social platforms is an asset
  • Strong verbal communication and written skills
  • Ability to:
    • Remain calm and poised in urgent situations;
    • Problem-solve in complex and unique customer service situations; and
    • Motivate a team to achieve and exceed their goals.
