CARDEN PARK, England — Canada’s quest for a first Women’s PGA Cup title officially gets underway Thursday as the country’s five-player team tees it up at Carden Park Golf Resort in England.
Levelwear has the Canadian team looking sharp in the red, white and black, as Christine Wong, Casey Ward, Caroline Ciot, Gina Nelson and Diana McDonald get set to compete against five other PGA’s from around the world.
Canada enters the event motivated with multiple returning players coming off runner-up finishes in each of the three editions of the Women’s PGA Cups. The team from the PGA of America bested the Canadian team in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
Two years ago, Stephanie Connelly Eiswerth and Allie Knight (both returning players this year) fired 6-under and 3-under respectively for the Americans to win handily. Christine Wong’s 2-under par three-day total, and final-round 69s from Caroline Ciot and Casey Ward, led to a runner-up finish. All the players mentioned above are competing again this year.
The 2022 Women’s PGA Cup was as dramatic as it gets; the Canadians held a slim final-round lead early in the day before Connelly Eiswerth’s spectacular back-nine gave the PGA of America team a two-stroke victory.
The 54-hole competition is contested in team stroke play, with each player completing her own round each day and the three lowest scores from each team counting toward the daily total.
Wong (Vancouver, B.C), who is competing in her fourth Women’s PGA Cup, will lead the Canadian charge off the first tee at 8:30 a.m. local time. The Vancouver, B.C. professional will open the competition alongside Great Britain & Ireland’s Sian Evans and the United States’ Stephanie Connelly Eisworth.
Casey Ward (Mississauga, ON) will follow at 8:42 a.m., playing alongside Great Britain & Ireland’s Heather Macrae and the United States’ Sandra Changkija. Ward is also making her fourth Women’s PGA Cup appearance, having represented Canada at each of the previous three editions.
Making her Women’s PGA Cup debut, Diana McDonald (Vancouver, B.C.) will tee off at 8:54 a.m. with Great Britain & Ireland’s Tracy Boyes and the United States’ Kim Paez. McDonald enters the event with plenty of recent confidence after earning low PGA of Canada Professional honours at this summer’s PGA Women’s Championship of Canada.
Gina Nelson (Edmonton, AB), another Women’s PGA Cup rookie, will be Canada’s fourth player off the first tee at 9:06 a.m. Nelson will play alongside Great Britain & Ireland’s Holly Morgan and the United States’ Allie Knight. The Alberta professional brings an impressive competitive résumé to England, including four PGA of Alberta Women’s Championship titles.
Rounding out the Canadian contingent at 9:18 a.m. will be Caroline Ciot (Boucherville, Q.C.), who will play with Great Britain & Ireland’s Hazel Macgarvie and the United States’ Ashley Grier. Ciot is making her third Women’s PGA Cup appearance after representing Canada in 2022 and 2024.
The opening round will provide Canada with its first opportunity to establish itself in what promises to be a tightly contested six-team competition. Canada, the United States, Great Britain & Ireland, Australia, South Africa and Sweden are all represented at Carden Park, with each team consisting of five players.
