Kaleb Gorbahn’s Hole in One leads to Head Professional lead, Ed Maunder leads Head Teaching Professionals

The only things hotter than the temperature in Cancun on Monday were likely the start and finish of Kaleb Gorbahn’s round, and Eddie Maunder throughout the entire day.

Gorbahn, competing in the PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf, began his day on the fifth hole – where he made a par before heading to the 128-yard sixth.

He hit a gap wedge, which carried past the hole, and spun back for an ace. His dad, caddying this week, made sure to grab a photo of his son to commemorate the shot.

“Drinks are on you!” his playing partners joked; due to the fact players are staying at the all-inclusive Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort.

While Gorbahn, the Head Professional at Lynx Ridge Golf Club in Calgary, stumbled a bit on the back nine, making four bogeys in a five-hole stretch, he battled back, making birdie on three of his final five holes to sign for a 1-under 71, giving him a two-stroke lead over Kevin Black and Marc Hurtubise.

Meanwhile, in the Head Teaching Professional Championship supported by UpSwing Golf, Ed Maunder made four birdies in a row from holes 4-7 to sign for a 67 to take a one-stroke lead over David Li Sheman into round 2. Gord Burns is two back at 3-under.

“I felt good right from the get-go, even the past two days - I feel comfortable on this course,” said Maunder, who was the runner-up at this event at the same course in 2023. “I was steady out there, made lots of birdies and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

While it looks like Maunder and Sheman may be in for a tight 54-hole battle, they are also teammates in the InterZone competition, which Ontario leads by eight thanks in large part to the duo’s play.

“We have some of the best in the world I feel, guys who are great teachers and players, and that is a great combo,” said Maunder. “I love playing with the guys and hopefully we get to play together later in the week.”

The second round will begin at 8:30 AM ET and is a shotgun start.
