Sharp, Shepley, Sherlock, Kim and Kane to Compete for National Title

(ACTON, ON) August 16, 2011:
The PGA of Canada continues to announce more additions to the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada presented by Nike Golf including a number of well-known Canadian golfers.

New additions to the field include Alena Sharp of Brantford, ON, the number-one ranked Canadian female golfer on the LPGA Tour and winner of the 2004 PGA Women’s Championship of Canada.

Sharp will be joined by fellow Canadian and LPGA member Jessica Shepley, 2009 champion of the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada presented by Nike Golf and a recent winner on the LPGA Futures Tour; Samantha Richdale winner of the 2004 British Columbia Amateur Championship; and Stephanie Sherlock who recently finished tied for 16th at the Avnet LPGA Classic.

LPGA Futures Tour members, Sue Kim of Langley, BC who qualified for this year’s US Open and Seema Sadekar of the Big Break will also compete in the event to be contested at Bayview Golf and Country Club, in Thornhill, ON August 30th to September 1st.

“We are thrilled to have such a talented group of women at this year’s event, especially on the 25th anniversary”, said PGA of Canada Chief Executive Officer Gary Bernard. “It’s sure to be an exciting event and one that I am really looking forward too.”

Earlier in the week the PGA of Canada announced that Lorie Kane committed to the event. Kane, a past champion of the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada, has won the championship a record five-times, including four consecutive years (96, 97, 98, 99 and 01). Kane is a sixteen-year veteran on the LPGA Tour, and a four-time winner earning more than $6.8 million. She is currently 81st on the LPGA official money list.

The full field of players will be announced following the August 19th entry closing date.

Tournament week will kick-off with practice rounds and the Simmlands Insurance Pro-Am in support of Women of Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) on Tuesday, August 30th, championship play will be conducted Wednesday, August 31st and Thursday, September 1st with 18 holes of stroke-play each day.
