Oh, Canada

Oh, Canada

The Canadian flag proudly waved last Friday evening at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla.

More than 300 PGA of Canada professionals, members of the Canadian golf media, PGA of Canada sponsors and partners, and friends of the Association were in attendance for Canada Night—presented by the PGA of Canada and PGA Worldwide Golf Exhibitions and sponsored by Sunice, Tommy Hilfiger Golf and AUR.

“What an awesome turnout we have tonight,” says PGA of Canada CEO, Gary Bernard. “It’s great to see so many familiar faces from around the Canadian golf landscape,” adding, “anyone who is anyone in the Canadian golf industry is here tonight.”

Undoubtedly the evening’s highlight was the honouring of Dick Grimm—2011 George Cumming Distinguished Service Award winner. And while the 88-year-old was unable to attend the evening in person due to health concerns, a heartfelt video message from Grimm was played for the receptive crowd.

“I thought Dick’s video was really outstanding,” says PGA of Canada President, Glenn Cundari. “As always, his words were sincere and really captured the attention of every person in the room.”

Prior to Grimm’s video, a special video from Jack Nicklaus, arguably golf’s greatest golfer, was played.

“How about that Jack video, eh,” Bernard says. “Here’s the greatest player in the history of the game singing the praises of his good old pal, Dick Grimm.”

Alan Fletcher, president of the Fletcher Leisure Group (and son of 1952 Canadian PGA Championship winner and 1954 Canadian Open champion, Pat Fletcher) was on hand and passed along a wonderful story about his father’s relationship with Grimm.

Greg Seeman, Executive Professional at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ont., accepted Grimm’s award on his behalf, while longtime TSN sports personality, Jim Van Horne was the emcee for the evening’s festivities.

Other faces in the crowd included PGA of America CEO, Joe Steranka; Adams Golf founder, Barney Adams; former PGA of Canada Presidents Warren Crosbie, Harry Brotchie and Sam Young; PGAs of Europe CEO, Ian Randell; and numerous PGA of Canada National Award winners, both past and present.
