KRIS TAMULIS FIRST ROUND LEADER AT SOGGY CANADIAN PGA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY NIKE GOLF

MISSISSAUGA, ON (August 7, 2008) – LPGA Tour player, Kris Tamulis of Naples, FLA has emerged as the first round leader at the 2008 Canadian PGA Women’s Championship presented by NIKE Golf at Credit Valley Golf and Country Club in Mississauga, ON.

After a morning of persistent rain, threatening thunderstorms and damp conditions, Tamulis shot a three-under 69, and leads by one shot over LPGA Tour players Hannah Jun of San Diego, CA and Lisa Strom of Huntersville, NC.

In the afternoon, thunderstorms delayed play for three hours with only half of the field through the course. However, the rain didn’t stop Tamulis who didn’t have a single bogey on her card. Tamulis hit 14 fairways and 14 greens on her journey around Credit Valley Golf and Country Club and felt that her fairway woods contributed to her success in the rain today. “I really hit the ball well today, especially in the fairways and I believe that’s what gave me the advantage in the rain. I just tried to keep the ball in play and make the putt when I was close,” said Tamulis who played the first six holes in the pouring rain.

2008 marks the fourth season on the LPGA Tour for Tamulis, who recently tied for 59th position at the RICOH Women’s British Open pushing her over the $100,000 mark in earnings this year. She is currently ranked 83rd on the LPGA Tour money list and is looking to add the $11, 500 first place cheque to her earnings this year, “I am really happy to be out here at this National Championship and to play in the Toronto area because I grew up in Michigan and it really reminds me of home”.

Tamulis’ lighthearted theory to her success is to have a good time on the course and to not take the game too seriously. “It’s actually funny,” remarks Tamulis, “my caddie for this Championship is Moira Dunn who also competes on the LPGA Tour, but she was the one who was extremely professional and serious on the course, and I was the one who was having a good time.” Tomorrow, Tamulis is looking to stay consistent, take advantage of the longer holes and work on her putting, after leaving a few putts short today.

Only one shot behind Tamulis are LPGA Tour players Hannah Jun and Lisa Strom at 70. Jun is a rookie on Tour and is only just beginning to adjust to the hectic lifestyle on Tour. Jun recorded four birdies and two bogeys on the rain soaked course. “Today I was fairly happy with my game once the rain stopped, and tomorrow I’m going to focus on consistent shots and putts to give myself the same opportunities that I had today,” states Jun who has currently made five cuts in her eight tournaments played on Tour.

Lisa Strom recorded three birdies, one bogey and made some key putts to save par throughout her round. “Today I was patient and hit a lot of greens and made some ‘Elmers Glue’ putts as my coach calls it,” laughs Strom, “they are the putts that keep your round together”. Tomorrow, Strom plans to work on her pre-shot routine to keep focused on the mental aspect of the game instead of the physical shots.

Low Canadian PGA Club Professional of the day was past champion and Associate Professional at Rosemere Golf Club in Rosemere, Québec , Marie Josee Rouleau, who carded a 73 recording three birdies and four bogeys. This is Rouleau’s fourth consecutive year at the CPGA Women’s Championship. In 2006, Rouleau notched her first Canadian PGA Women’s Championship title and in 2005 and 2007 Rouleau placed second.

Low amateur of the day was Jennifer Lochhead of Burlington, ON carding a seven-over 79 with one birdie and 11 pars.

The final round of the championship will take place tomorrow, with tee times starting at 8:00AM with the last group departing at 11:50AM. For pairings and results please visit www.cpga.com
