‘Big Break’ Stars to Tee it up at Canadian PGA Women’s Championship

MISSISSAUGA, ON (August 4, 2008) - The Canadian PGA announced today that rising golf stars Susan Choi and Adrienne Gautreaux from the hit television show Big Break Ka’anapali will be teeing it up this Thursday, August 7th and 8th, 2008 at Credit Valley Golf and Country Club in Mississauga, Ontario at the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship presented by NIKE Golf.

The ‘Big Break’ is The Golf Channel’s reality television program with the premise to award aspiring professional golfers with exemptions into selected events on certain tours. The Big Break Ka’anapali was the ninth edition of the show featuring an all-female cast. The winner received an exemption into the 2008 Navistar LPGA Classic, entry fees to all 2009 Futures Tour tournaments waived, an Adams Golf endorsement deal, and a BMW Z4 Coupe.

Susan Choi was the only amateur to compete in the Big Break Ka’anapali. Originally studying to be a doctor, in her sophomore year she realized how much she enjoyed competing, practicing, and playing the game of golf. By her senior year, Choi said she was majoring in golf, a focus that improved her scoring average from 88 as a freshman to scratch by the time she graduated. Currently, she plays mini-tour events but remains an amateur to improve her game before turning professional.

Adrienne Gautreaux earned a spot in the finals of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament in 2005 and ’06, where she fell short by one stroke each time. She competed on the Duramed FUTURES Tour from 2004 to 2007 recording her best finish in 2005, tied for 4th place at the 2005 IOS FUTURES Golf Classic in El Paso, TX. Gautreaux was awarded the Dinah Shore Trophy in 2004, which is granted by the Ladies Professional Golf Foundation to recognize a female collegiate golfer who excels in both academics and athletics.

The Canadian PGA Women’s Championship presented by NIKE Golf is a two day 36-hole stroke play championship at Credit Valley G&CC in Mississauga, Ontario. The 21st edition of the event, which will also be open to foreign players for the first time, offers a purse of $70,000.

Along with opening the field to foreign players, the event is receiving a makeover of sorts as amateurs and professionals can be fitted and demo NIKE Golf’s innovative products before the Simmlands Insurance Pro-Am on August 6th, which will be followed by a NIKE Golf fashion show. Pro-am participants will also be eligible to win a NIKE Golf makeover.

Past champions include Lori Kane (’96,’97,’98,’99 & ’01), Nancy Harvey (’94,’95 & ’00) and Alena Sharp (’04).
