Jason Giesbrecht, director of golf at Royal Colwood becomes just the fourth Canadian PGA member to earn his level 3 Rules of Golf certificate

Most recreational golfers will encounter a rules situation out on the course at some point, and most will want or need an answer right away. Many times, the best person to ask is the club professional working in the pro-shop.

Although it’s safe to say that many of these professionals know and understand the Rules of Golf, and have some expertise in dealing with rules situation, especially on their own course, few have taken the necessary steps to become provincially or nationally certified.

In order to do so, an individual must complete 4 levels of training. The first two happen through online programs, while Levels 3 and 4 are done as on-site classroom seminars.

The level 3 program is conducted by our provincial golf associations, while the RCGA (Golf Canada) handles the national Level 4 seminars.

Having just finished instructing a Rules of Golf seminar in Victoria, B.C., I was happy to learn about Jason Giesbrecht.

Jason attended a Level 3 seminar at the Morningstar GC in Parksville, B.C. a few weeks before my arrival. His exam was waiting for me to mark once I got there. If he achieved a score of 85% or better, Jason would become only the 4th Canadian PGA member in Canada to hold a valid Level 3 certificate.

Further adding to Jason’s pressure is that as the director of golf at Royal Colwood, he deals with a number of very qualified Level 4 Rules officials – actually the most at any one club in Canada.

Royal Colwood’s member roster includes Dale Jackson, Bill Hobbis, Syd Price and Barry Anderson. All are veteran officials who were anxiously waiting to see if Jason would get through this provincial test and continue on the path to Rules guru-ism.

The marks are in? and it’s official. With a score of 91.5%, Jason joins Kevin Corriveau of St-Clair College, Sylvain Coucelles at Chateau Montebello and Liam O’Neil from Markland Wood Country Club as the only Canadian PGA members to currently hold level 3 rules certification.

Preparing for, and obtaining the certification mark on what is a very difficult examination on the rules (not to mention keeping up with the 600+ members of Royal Colwood) is a tremendous achievement.

My congratulations go out to Jason as well as Kevin, Sylvain and Liam. I hope to be seeing all of them at one of our national seminars in years to come. Well Done!
