Delivered in partnership with the PGA of Canada, Golf Canada, and the Coaching Association of Canada, this workshop is designed for individuals who currently work with, or are interested in working with, children and youth, with a focus on introducing the fundamental skills of golf in a fun and engaging way.
Over two days, you will build the knowledge and confidence needed to coach at the community level. The workshop encourages you to reflect on your understanding of young participants, junior golf, and the types of environments that foster positive experiences. Through a combination of interactive classroom sessions and hands-on outdoor activities, you will have the opportunity to apply key concepts while learning alongside other Community Golf Coaches.
TEACHING & LEARNING
• Understand the first tee coach program. “How” we deliver the program
• Be introduced to how junior aged golfers learn, and in particular, learn motor skills
• Be introduced to the term “discrete” motor skill and it’s relevance in learning golf skills
• Discuss the concept of fun and how it relates to youth sports
• Be exposed to age appropriate competition and activities that support these competitions
LIFE SKILLS
• Understand the importance of introducing life skills within youth golf programs
• Identify the coach’s role in teaching life skills through golf
• Be comfortable with the Life Skills Framework
• Recognize golf-specific scenarios amenable to teaching life skills
• Articulate the role life skills play in children’s global development
ETHICAL COACHING*
• Be aware of current safe sport training and Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and
Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS)
• Distinguish between legal and ethical situations and be introduced to an ethical decision
making model
*As of April 1st, 2026, the Coaching Association of Canada has centralized the Make Ethical Decisions Training and Evaluation, which will no longer be delivered in sport-specific training. If you desire to be "trained" following this workshop, you will be required to complete the training/evaluation.
PLANNING AND EXECUTING FOR SUCCESS
• Be exposed to a variety of nontraditional equipment that can be used in a junior golf activities
• Focus on safety within each activity and appropriate ratio of juniors to Community Golf Coaches
• Develop an inventory of tools and equipment that can be used in future planning and
implementation of junior golf sessions
• Be introduced to the PGA of Canada’s lesson planning format
• Practice designing a golf session for a group of junior golfers
• Be introduced to the elements of a lesson that junior aged golfers find engaging
• Be introduced to the importance of pre-designing junior golf sessions
• Discuss common challenges in designing junior golf sessions
PRACTICING AND PLAYING THE GAME
• Be aware of common safety risks for the sport of golf and children ages 12 and younger
• Practice the prevention and management of common safety risks in golf and children ages 12
and younger
• Be introduced to common equipment required to play golf
• Be exposed to alternative forms of junior golf equipment
• Develop a list of specific rules of golf that are relevant for different age junior golfers
• Develop a list of specific behaviours that reflect age appropriate golf etiquette
• Be introduced to basic technical aspects of putting, chipping and the full swing
• Be exposed to well performed executions of a variety skills by junior golfers
• Review and discuss basic skill matrices for putting, chipping and full swing
• Have an opportunity to complete micro teaching sessions focusing on the technical
adjustments needed for a participant
This workshop is part of Golf’s National Coaching Certification Program under the Community Stream. Upon completion of all three days, coaches will receive “In-Training” status as a Community Golf Coach through the Coaching Association of Canada.
The workshop will be recorded under each coach’s NCCP number (one will be issued if you do not already have one). Your coaching transcript will reflect your status, and you will be able to print a coaching card to share your credentials with employers or parents of junior participants.
Workshop Status
Coaches may progress to “Trained” status by completing the Make Ethical Decisions (MED) training and evaluation through the Coaching Association of Canada.
Effective April 1, 2026, and in accordance with the mandate of the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), coaches who wish to be considered “trained” are required to complete the Make Ethical Decisions training and evaluation through The Locker .
Participation in the Make Ethical Decisions training is optional and available for a fee of $85. Coaches who choose to complete this requirement will be eligible to progress from “in-training” to “trained” status. There is no deadline to transition to "trained status".
