General Management 101: “So you want to be a General Manager in the golf and private club industry?”

Being a golf professional gives you the opportunity to look at a number of career opportunities in the golf, resort and private club space. If a club or resort facility has a golf course, who better to run the entire operation than a certified golf professional? That said, it’s not as easy as it may seem, as multiple disciplines come into play, experience in human resources and finance are key, but food/beverage and agronomy are the two big ones. This presentation will help you better understand how to make the transition to being a General Manager in the resort and private club industry.

Certification combined with education are what Mike believes are the cornerstones of success in business and in life and to that end Mike is a Certified Club Manager (CCM) and Certified Chief Executive (CCE) through the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA), as well as a certified PGA member through the PGA of America (A13) and the PGA of South Africa (Master Professional). In 2011 Michael was awarded the CMAA Club Manager of the Year award for his dedication and commitment to the club industry.

An avid sportsman himself, Mike has twice completed the grueling Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, numerous other ultra-triathlons, two ultra-distance marathons and 40 regular marathons. Besides golf, his other passions are fishing, photography, travel, wine and reading.
