Yvan Beauchemin Wins in his Debut at the BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship

- Beauchemin notches his 5th Canadian PGA National Championship Title -

KANATA, ON (July 5, 2008) - Yvan Beauchemin of Louiseville, QC fired a four-under par 68 today to win by one shot over Craig Marseilles of Maple, ON at the BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship at The Marshes Golf Club in Kanata, ON.

Beauchemin adds the Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship to his already impressive resume of four Canadian PGA Club Professional Championships. In addition to his now five Canadian PGA National Championships, Beauchemin is one of the most decorated players in Quebec PGA history and was the 2007 Order of Merit winner on the Quebec PGA tour as well.

Beauchemin birdied the first hole of the day to move into a tie with Marseilles atop the leaderboard and set the stage for a seventeen hole battle with Marseilles that saw the two combatants post ten birdies combined in the final round.

“I am so excited to win this Canadian PGA National Championship, especially in my first try at this event,” stated Beauchemin, who plans on attending Champions Tour Qualifying School this fall. “I really enjoyed playing in this event for the first time and I can’t say enough great things about the organization and atmosphere of this event. I will be back to defend my title next year.”

The turning point of the round occurred at the par-3 8th hole, a dangerous 135-yard hole that is surrounded by water in front and the beautiful Brookstreet Resort at the back. Fresh off a birdie at the option filled 7th hole, Beauchemin calmly knocked his ball to about 17 feet of the flag and two-putted for par. Marseilles, faced with a hole that gave him fits all week, hit a high draw that bounced off the retaining rock wall in front of the green and ricocheted back into the water. The resulting double bogey saw Marseilles’ one shot lead evaporate into a one shot deficit heading to the 9th tee.

“The 8th hole was trouble for me all week,” said Marseilles, a 2008 Champions Tour Conditional Card Member. “I really didn’t think my shot was that bad today and I didn’t even know it was in the water until I asked my playing competitors and heard the moans of the crowd. The event was fantastic and it was a lot of fun being in the hunt and seeing some of my old friends.”

Beauchemin’s stats for the entire week were about as good as they could possibly get. He hit another 16 greens in regulation in the final round bringing his tournament total to 48/54 and he figures he only missed one or two fairways for the duration of the championship.

“I finally hit it closer to the pin today and poured in some key putts today to take advantage of how solid I was hitting it,” said Beauchemin, who won $8,500 for his victory.

The Championship came right down to the wire as both Beauchemin and Marseilles made clutch birdie putts on the par-3 17th hole and Marseilles narrowly missed his 35 foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have sent the tournament into a playoff.

Just as impressive as the Beauchemin victory is the 3rd place finish of 66 year-old Bob Panasik of Windsor, ON. The Canadian Golf Hall of Famer shot a one-under par 71 in the final round to finish with a three day total of 216, only a few shots behind the “rookies” Beauchemin and Marseilles. In addition to his third place finish in the overall championship, Panasik took home the Super Senior Division (60 + years of age) which brings his total earnings for the event to $5,000.00.

Canadian PGA Professionals pride themselves on the integrity and honesty of the game of golf. There is no better example than that of first round co-leader John C. Davis of Waterdown, ON who unfortunately had to disqualify himself from the tournament after interpreting a local rule incorrectly. The Ottawa area has been pelted with rain nearly every day for the entire month of June which resulted in the Canadian PGA Tournament Staff implementing a lift, clean and place rule for the championship. Davis, having interpreted the rule incorrectly during the week, called Canadian PGA Tournament Director Brad Moyer on his drive back to Toronto to inform him of the infraction and said he must disqualify himself from the tournament.

Don Renaud of Kanata, ON successfully defended his Diamond Division (70 + years of age) title yesterday and took home the $1,100.00 first place cheque for his efforts.

- 2006 Champion Graham Gunn of Nepean, ON shot a four-under par 68 in the final round to jump up into a tie for 4th place with John Rushnell of Manilla, ON

- Dave Bell of Windsor, ON struggled with the putter in the final round and finished in 9th place alone, his 5th top-10 finish in the Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship.

- 2007 Champion and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Dave Barr of Kelowna, BC shot a two-under par 70 to move up to 10th place with Terry Miskolczi of Okatie, SC and Dan Clark of Aurora, ON.

The $55,000 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship is contested over three days. The competition is open to Canadian PGA Professionals 50 and older. The Super Senior (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) division is contested over two days of 36 holes.

The Marshes Golf Club is one of the premier golf destinations and leading corporate-play facility in the National Capital Region. The Robert Trent Jones II design opened for public play in 2001 and has garnered many accolades. The 7,027-yard course includes six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s.
