Canadian PGA “Round for Dad” Gearing up to be Huge Success for Prostate Cancer Research

ACTON, ON (June 12, 2008) - Ideas are flowing and excitement is building as many golf facilities across Canada prepare for June 15th, 2008, Father’s Day “Round for Dad”, an initiative that the Canadian PGA and the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation have partnered together on to raise awareness of prostate cancer – the most common cancer in men.

“Prostate cancer is a disease that has affected many of our Members and there is no better way than to raise awareness on Father’s Day, a day that many associate with golf,” stated Steve Carroll, Executive Director of the Canadian PGA. “The Canadian PGA is thrilled to be partnering with such a tremendous charitable cause and can’t wait to see the results of this National initiative.”

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men with over 24,000 Canadian males being diagnosed in this year alone. Currently, one in seven men are expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime and one in 27 will die from the disease.

The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada raises funds and awareness across Canada to educate men about the threat of the disease and fund leading-edge research into the prevention, detection, treatment and a cure for prostate cancer. The Foundation has invested more than $17 million in research and public education over the past 11 years.

By partnering with the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada, the Canadian PGA will participate in a variety of events that will help raise funds to battle the disease on two fronts; through building awareness and creating funds for research.

A few examples of what courses will be doing this Father's Day to raise funds are the following:

Bayview Golf and Country Club, Thornhill, ON: Head Professional, Warren Crosbie will be donating 10% of Pro Shop sales on Sunday, June 15th, 2008 to the Prostate Cancer Reseach Foundation of Canada.

The Golf Dome, Winnipeg, MB: Father's can mini-golf for free at The Golf Dome with a paid child and a donation for Prostate Cancer Research. $2.00 from every hour spent on the driving range will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation and The Golf Dome will also accept personal donations from customers on Father's Day.

University Golf Club, Vancouver, BC: General Manager and Executive Professional, Michael Mather, will be donating $5.00 for every power cart rented on the Father’s Day Weekend (Sat, June 14 & Sun, June 15) and to add to the funds, UGC will match the amount raised.

Wolf Run Golf Course, Janetville, ON: President, Dave Clayton will make a donation of $250.00 towards the Prostate Cancer Research for the Father's Day Partnership.

Westmount Golf and Country Club, Kitchener, ON: Head Professional, Rob Strahan is donating $10.00 for every lesson or purchase over $50.00 on Father’s Day weekend (Friday, Saturday or Sunday).

Revelstoke Golf Club, Revelstoke, BC: General Manager John Franks, will take $5.00 from every power cart rental and $2.00 from every large bucket of balls sold that day and donate to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada.

Dutton Meadows Golf Club, Dutton, ON: Head Professional, Brian Girard is planning on providing all golfers with tickets on the tee of a par 3 for a hit the green contest. For those that miss the green, or roll off, tickets are $5.00. All tickets will go into a draw at the end of the day for a set of clubs donated by the facility with all proceeds going to the Prostate Research Foundation Canada.

Already this year, the Canadian PGA generously donated funds towards prostate cancer research instead of providing gifts for guests at the 2008 President’s Dinner honouring Past President Warren Crosbie – Head Professional at Bayview Golf & Country Club in Thornhill, Ontario.

Let’s help reverse the trend and get golfing this Father’s Day in support of the Canadian PGA and prostate cancer research partnership!
