The PGA of Canada’s weeklong coach camp—Coach of Developing Competitors (CDC)—is back for the sixth-straight year in January 2017.

An integral part of the competition stream of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), CDC takes place Jan. 30-Feb. 4, 2017 at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance (PGA Village) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The six-day coach camp focuses on coaches working with athletes from the Learn to Compete stage to the Compete to Win stages of golf’s Long Term Player Development guide.

Filled with networking, real life coaching scenarios, outdoor components in every module, plus some of the best coaches and industry experts in golf, can be best captured by hearing from previous participants by searching the #PGACDC hashtag.

“After attending CDC this past February, I have a much better understanding of how to get my athletes playing their best,” Sean Joyce, Team PEI Canada Summer Games head coach. “I had access to some of the top coaches in the world for an entire week who all shared their experience of being part of an athletes coaching team,” he said, adding, “of all the professional development seminars and courses I've attended over the years this was by far the best."

The annual cast of world-renowned coaches and experts includes three Team Canada coaches in Derek Ingram, Tristan Mullally and Robert Ratcliffe; the University of Calgary’s Dean of Kinesiology, Dr. Penny Werthner; The Golf Lab’s head teaching professional Liam Mucklow; and the PGA of Canada’s technical director Glenn Cundari.

“The staff of experienced facilitators, the amount of information, hands on training and the organization of the entire event was something I found very beneficial,” said the director of instruction, Golf Performance Centre at Whistle Bear Dave Smallwood“ It had been sometime since I had spent that amount of time in a learning atmosphere but I found myself and my team were invigorated daily to learn.

The cost for the CDC workshop is $2,000; however, for those interested in attending there are numerous avenues for financial support available. PGA of Canada bursaries are available for funding of up to $500, while all coaches  have automatic access to NCCP workshop bursaries through their provincial/territorial coaching representatives. Additionally, PGA of Canada members have the option to pay in segments for the CDC workshop by creating a customized payment plan with the association’s education department.

More information about the Coach of Developing Competitors context, career paths and case studies—both in and out of the industry—can be found in PGA of Canada’s Career Coach Guide, Building a Career in Coaching Golf digital publication. The one-of-a-kind document, which is aimed at members who have chosen coaching golf as a career, probes into what it means to be a coach rather than a teacher, including learning how to coach and the PGA of Canada’s teaching and coaching framework

Any PGA of Canada member is able to attend this workshop, as there is no pre-requisite or prior training required.

NCCP training (which includes CDC) is the only golf coaching certification program recognized by leading sport organizations such as Sport Canada and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), and has generated interest from PGA’s and golf associations around the world.

Hotel accommodations have been arranged at Residence Inn by Marriott, St. Lucie West (1920 SW Fountainview Blvd.) at a rate of $99(USD)/night, with a block of rooms available for PGA of Canada members until January 6th.

CDC registration will be open until Jan. 6 and a minimum of 14 participants must be registered for the workshop to proceed.
