Port Royal Golf Course to Host PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada

This year’s PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy is headed to the island of Bermuda and the famed Port Royal Golf Course.

The 54-hole national championship, which features PGA of Canada head professionals, head teaching professionals and executive professionals, takes place Nov. 21-24.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to take the PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy to Bermuda and the wonderful venue of Port Royal Golf Course,” said PGA of Canada President Steve Wood. “The PGA of Canada and Bermuda have a tremendous working relationship and this latest partnership further cements that fact.”

The Bermuda Tourism Authority and the Fairmont Southampton will be partners for the national championship. Longtime supporter of the event and PGA Professionals, Titleist & FootJoy, will once again be on board as presenting sponsor.

“Bermuda has developed a very positive relationship with the PGA of Canada,” said Pat Phillip-Fairn, Chief Product & Experience Development Officer for the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “To have the PGA of Canada bring this prestigious championship here is verification of Bermuda’s quality golf product. We’re delighted to add this prestigious tournament to Bermuda’s golf calendar for 2016.”

Designed by world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1970, Port Royal underwent a significant renovation in 2009, which included a complete redesign. Port Royal is one of the world's premier daily-fee golf courses with immaculate course conditions and sweeping ocean views from nearly every hole. The most memorable feature of Port Royal is the signature par-three 16th hole, a classic Trent Jones work of art, marrying the natural features of the land with the designer's boundless imagination. Widely regarded as one of the greatest par threes in golf, the 16th is a 235-yard crescent-shaped masterpiece, showcasing breathtaking views of the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Port Royal hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 2009-2014, seeing such winners as Adam Scott, Ernie Els, Martin Kaymer, Padraig Harrington, Keegan Bradley and Lucas Glover.

"We are very proud of our involvement with the Club Professional Championship, as it serves as an extension of our support of the PGA of Canada and our valued business partners, the PGA of Canada members," said Acushnet Canada President Ted Manning. "We are looking forward to an exciting week of competition at Port Royal and hosting our Club Professional Partners at the national championship in November."

In 2015, Danny King of The Performance Academy at Magna captured his 3rd PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada. The PGA of Canada’s fourth-ranked player had a three-day total of 11-under-par at Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz., which was two shots better than James Skrypec of The Golf Academy at Deer Ridge. With the win, King became the first person in association’s history to win three PGA of Canada national championships in the same calendar year. King also won the 2015 PGA Championship of Canada at Cabot Links and the PGA Team Championship of Canada (with partner Billy Walsh).

In addition to competing for the overall championship trophy, players in the PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada earn much-coveted ranking points with hopes of moving up on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC. Players who are ranked inside the top 64 following the PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada earn invites into the following year's PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf.

The Inter-Zone Team Championship, which is comprised of four players per zone (and three scores per team counting), is also handed out after 36-holes.

Former champions of the PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada include Danny King, Adam Chamberlain, Roger Beale, Norm Jarvis, Gar Hamilton, Bob Panasik, Yvan Beauchemin, Graham Gunn, Ken Tarling and Brian Hutton.
