Bermuda Plays Host to Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada this October

After an exceptionally memorable first year, the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada returns to Bermuda and the iconic Mid Ocean Golf Club in 2016.

The championship, which takes place Oct. 24-27, will once again see two PGA of Canada professionals pairing up with the partner of his or her choice. The pair competes together in their respective PGA of Canada Zone Qualifier with hopes of landing one of the coveted spots in the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada.

“In 2015 we launched the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada and it was an amazing and memorable success for everyone who participated,” says PGA of Canada president Steve Wood. “So, you can only imagine how excited we are about this year’s championship and the PGA of Canada’s return to the island paradise of Bermuda and the historic Mid Ocean Golf Club.”

“Launching the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship in Bermuda was an unbelievable experience for the athletes, PGA of Canada, Bermuda and our brand,” Tyler Keenan, Marketing Director of Nike Golf Canada. “We are excited to return to Bermuda and deliver another memorable event.”

Ranked the 47th best golf course outside of the United States by Golf Digest, The Mid Ocean Club was designed by world-renowned architect Charles Blair Macdonald and first opened for play in 1921. The club has played host to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 2007 and 2008, and has hosted such heads of state as Presidents George H.W. Bush and Dwight Eisenhower; Winston Churchill, The Duke of Windsor; former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney; as well as baseball icon Babe Ruth.

“In Bermuda we’re excited to welcome back the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada,” said Bermuda Tourism Authority CEO Bill Hanbury. “The Mid Ocean Golf Club, with challenging holes and breath taking South Shore vistas, is a fitting reward for the zone qualifiers competing across Canada this summer.  We can’t wait to celebrate your success in October with an exciting tournament format at a truly unique venue.”

In 2015, Billy Walsh and Danny King, the PGA of Canada’s No. 1 and No. 4-ranked players, put together a three-day total of 21 under par, besting the teams of Luc Boisvert and Louis-Pierre Godin and, Gordon Burns and Keir Smith.

“The golf course is just so much fun to play,” King said. “With the team formats we play, Mid Ocean is really the perfect venue for this national championship because there’s so many holes where you’re presented with varying options to make birdie.”

The Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada will once again feature different team formats for each day—fourball, foursomes and scramble.
