TOP 10 CONFIRMED FOR CABOT LINKS

TOP 10 CONFIRMED FOR CABOT LINKS

When Cabot Links was announced as host venue this year’s PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf the golf world took notice.

And now with just a little more than a month before the start of the championship, anticipation continues to build with each of the top 10 players from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC committing to play.

“Back in January we announced this year’s PGA Championship of Canada was headed to the amazing Cabot Links and everyone in the golf world immediately took notice,” said PGA of Canada president Constant Priondolo. “With the top 10 players from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings already signed up to play, people are yet again taking notice and are eagerly awaiting the start of this historic championship.”

The top 10 (in order) includes:

  • No. 1-ranked Billy Walsh, last year’s PGA Championship of Canada finalist and ’13 PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada winner
  • The past two PGA Championship of Canada winners Dave Levesque and Bryn Parry
  • Two-time PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada winner Mike Belbin
  • ’12 PGA Championship of Canada winner Eric Laporte
  • Two-time PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada winner Brian McCann
  • Runner-up at the ’12 PGA Championship of Canada and ’13 PGA Assistants’ Championship Lindsay Bernakevitch
  • Former PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada winner Marc Girouard
  • Two-time PGA of BC championship winner Brad Clapp
  • Two-time PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada winner Danny King

The PGA Championship of Canada, which takes place June 14-18, will be the first professional championship Cabot Links has hosted since opening in the summer of 2012.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out to Cabot Links for this year’s PGA Championship of Canada,” said Walsh. “I’ve heard nothing but incredible things from people who have been onsite at Cabot Links. It really looks to be a perfect spot for the PGA of Canada’s biggest and most prestigious championship.”

Cabot Links, which debuted at No. 2 on SCOREGolf’s 2014 Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada Ranking and is currently No. 42 on Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, is located on the western shores of Cape Breton Island in Inverness, N.S.

In addition to the top 10 already committing to play, 14 of the top 15 players from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings are set to tee it up at Cabot Links.

This year’s championship at Cabot Links sees a format change with the top 64 players from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC playing two rounds of stroke play. The top-16 players from the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event will fill our the four match play brackets—Stan Leonard, George Knudson, Al Balding and Moe Norman—with the eventual champion winning four match play rounds.

The PGA of Canada is also proud to unveil the championship’s logo.

The logo, which features Cabot Links’ distinctive tall ship and Celtic font, will be used extensively throughout the championship’s branding efforts, including all media and social media initiatives.

“The PGA of Canada is very proud of the PGA Championship of Canada and we’re honoured to be heading to Cabot Links, so we wanted to create a logo that would be mutually beneficial to the two brands,” said PGA of Canada managing director of corporate communications and digital media Chris Fry.

Past champions of the PGA Championship of Canada include Moe Norman, George Knudson, Al Balding, Bob Panasik, Wilf Homenuik, Stan Leonard, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer.

Attendance to the PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf is free and spectators are encouraged to attend during tournament play.
