Greenwood Goes Low

Dan Greenwood surged to the top of the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada leaderboard Tuesday.

Greenwood, the Director of Operations at Greystone Golf Club, posted a phenomenal second round 6-under-par 65 at SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, Ariz.

"I made the turn at 4 under and once I did that I knew it was going to be a good day," Greenwood said. "But I was holding on for dear life coming home. There's some tight shots out there and if that ball bounces the wrong way you're in some cactus."

Greenwood's two-day total of 143 was one-shot better than Marc Girouard of Club de Golf Diamont when play was suspended due to darkness with four groups remaining on the course.

"This is not a golf course that you can attack," Girouard said. "Around here in order to score, you've got to be able to put the ball in play off the tee and be a good putter."

Ron Kenesky and Scott Allred lurk two off the pace, with 2012 PGA Championship of Canada winner Eric Laporte, two-time PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada winner Danny King and Matt Peavoy, T5 at 4 over heading into Wednesday's final round.

The Inter-Zone Team Championship, which is comprised of four players per zone (and three scores per team counting), was settled Tuesday at SunRidge Canyon. Team Quebec-Girouard, Laporte, Dave Levesque and Greg Cuthill-bested Team British Columbia by a shot. Team Ontario rounded out the top three.

The field will be cut to the low 70 players (and ties) once the second round is completed Wednesday morning.

Girouard, who won the 1997 PGA Assistants' Championship of Canada, said he'd love to win another national title.

"This is a championship I would love to win and I'm definitely going to give it a shot," Girouard said.

Greenwood on the other hand is still searching for his first national championship and said he will relish the opportunity Wednesday.

"It's going to be fun out there tomorrow and I think all of us who are in contention will be competing like crazy," Greenwood said.

The winner of the championship will earn $12,000 as well as much-coveted ranking points with hopes of moving up on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC. Players who are ranked inside the top 64 following the Titleist & Footjoy PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada earn invites into the following year's PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf.
