Words from the Education Wing—Sport Leadership

Coordinator, Education

It’s awfully difficult not to be rejuvenated after returning from Ottawa last week at the Sport Leadership Conference delivered by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). Not only was the aura of being in Ottawa at this time of year (and given the latest tragedies that took over our nation’s capital inspiring enough), but also the growth of coaching over recent years has a lot of momentum to be excited about.

Surrounded by 67 other sports across the country, it’s no surprise to be stopped and commended by fellow colleagues on what golf and the PGA of Canada are doing when it comes to National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and growing the culture and expectations of coaching in our sport.

There are a growing number of PGA of Canada members who have created a career in coaching. Just a few months ago, we launched a resource for the membership who might be travelling down this pathway as well.

Career Coach Guide, Building a Career in Coaching Golf
is available in electronic form, or you can order a hard copy by contacting me directly at the national office. This resource was admired by many sports administrators last week and I encourage any PGA members interested in this pathway to take a closer look at this one-of-a-kind resource that was designed to help you build your own coaching business.

As we wind down from a busy summer and prepare for the winter months, I would be remised after attending Sport Leadership if I didn’t encourage all PGA members to plan ahead for 2015. Whether this means going from “Trained” to “Certified” status in one of our NCCP contexts, or putting a budget in place over the winter to come join us at one of our NCCP workshops next season, I am positive you will not be disappointed by the content, facilitators and learning you will gain by undertaking an NCCP context. As a coach myself (University of Laurier Women’s Softball), I’d love to talk to any PGA of Canada member about the NCCP and value of gaining Certification.

The PGA of Canada’s full NCCP schedule will be available March 1, 2015. Please contact me directly by phone at  1.800.782.5764 EXT. 236 or by email at matt@pgaofcanada.com for more information on becoming “Certified” in one of the NCCP contexts you have attended training for.
