Three Tied at PGA Assistants' Championship of Canada

Three Tied at PGA Assistants' Championship of Canada

The top of the leaderboard has tightened up at the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy.

Brian McCann, Billy Walsh and Bryn Parry lead the way at five under heading into Thursday’s final round at The Ridge at Manitou in McKellar, Ont.

“Billy and Brian can both shoot good numbers—and I’m not too sure who is around us—but I’ve seen those guys go pretty low, so hopefully tomorrow is my turn,” Parry said after his second round even-par 72.

The three leaders are each ranked inside the top 10 of the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC. Each is also a past winner of the PGA Assistants’ Championship with Parry a two-time champion. Serge Thivierge of Longueuil, Que., holds the record for most PGA Assistants’ Champion titles with three.

“I had it really going early, but unfortunately I made a couple of sloppy bogeys coming in,” Walsh admitted about this second round that included an eagle and three birdies thru the first five holes.

McCann on the other hand says his game’s consistent nature of hitting fairways and greens has paid off so far this week.

“I’ve hit the ball really well and in two rounds I’ve only played three holes over par.”

Lurking just one back of the lead are three players including G.W. King, Adam Bruce and Kent Fukushima who shot a course record 6-under-par 66 Wednesday afternoon in windy and rainy conditions at the Thomas McBroom designed The Ridge at Manitou.

First year PGA of Canada member Nick Kenney is at three under, two shots off the pace with Greg Pool and Alf Callowhill at two under for the championship.

Heading into Thursday’s final round a total of 20 golfers are within eight shots of the lead.

In the InterZone competition (compiled of four players on each team representing their respective PGA Zone) the squad from Ontario (Walsh, McCann, Kenney and Jim Kenesky) ran away with the title winning by 20 strokes. Team Quebec finished second and Alberta third.
