The PGA of Canada Remembers

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Hal after a brief courageous battle with cancer at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Sunday May 25th.

The family feels the good Lord must have had room in his foursome this beautiful Sunday afternoon to take Hal away at only 60 years young and full of heart.

He is survived by his wife Lynn "Mickey", Melissa (Jeff) and Kyle, brother Larry, nephews Scott (Heidi) and Michael. Survived by his mother Evelyn. Predeceased by Morris Schrader, Bob and Elsie Simpson.

Hal started his career in golf as a young assistant to then pro, Buddy Clark, at Rockway Golf Club in Kitchener. It was under Buddy's direction that Hal developed the work ethic and commitment to the game of golf he carried throughout his life.

After a year of apprenticeship under Albert Southgate at Galt Country Club, Hal moved to Beaverdale Golf Club, owned by the Labbett family, as assistant to Tony Curtin. Hal took on the role of Head Professional in 1981.

The last 27 years saw Hal overseeing operations at Centennial Park Golf Centre in Etobicoke, as Director of Golf and General Manager.

Hal has always been well respected in the golf community for his passion for teaching and promoting the game of golf. He was an excellent mentor and communicator to young professionals. To his credit, many Assistants who apprenticed under his guidance, have become successful PGA of Canada Head Professionals across the province.

Hal's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A service to celebrate Hal's life will take place on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Medical Day Care - Cambridge Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
