PGA of Canada Releases Career Coach Guide, Building a Career in Coaching Golf

The PGA of Canada is proud to release its newest member resource—Career Coach Guide, Building a Career in Coaching Golf .

The one-of-a-kind document is aimed at members who have chosen coaching golf as a career.

Glenn Cundari, the PGA of Canada’s Technical Director, says the idea for the 40-plus-page resource stems from the association’s new approach to instruction and coaching.

“We needed to be sure that members knew being a coach in golf was a viable career,” Cundari says. “So, the idea of the resource was something I thought we needed to develop to support members in choosing coaching as a career path.”

Primarily broken into three sections—coach of new competitors, coach of developing competitors and coach of high performers—Cundari, who was the main author of the resource, talks about the role of the coach, including the skills needed, training and educational activities, employment opportunities, and facility suggestions. There are also case studies for each section.

The document also probes into what it means to be a coach rather than a teacher, including learning how to coach and the PGA of Canada’s teaching and coaching framework.

As a whole, the guide is a resource for PGA of Canada professionals. But Cundari says he sees the document further developing into a practical business tool as well for the association’s members.

“There is no doubt in my mind that eventually over time, this resource will evolve and develop into more of a business resource than simply as a pure golf resource,” he says.

Featured in the resource are business case studies from the likes of PGA of Canada Master Professional Henry Brunton, as well as non-golf examples from the Pickering Horse Centre and the Mariposa Figure Skating Club. Each case study brings different ideas and examples to the table, which will be useful to PGA of Canada coaches looking to increase his or her business knowledge.

What makes this resource even more impressive is that it is really the only resource document of its kind.

“As far as I know there’s nothing else like this out there for coaches,” Cundari says. “I worked with five other sports and other PGAs in the development of this project and they have all been very supportive and as far as I can tell there isn't anything similar.”

The digital version of the Career Coach Guide, Building a Career in Coaching Golf is AVAILABLE HERE, while hard copies will be made available to trained coaches in 2013 later this fall.
