Lookout Point Country Club Hosts PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada

Fonthill, Ont.’s, Lookout Point Country Club is set to play host to a number of Canadian golf legends next week for the Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada presented by Adams Golf.

The 54-hole national championship, which takes Aug. 6-9 at Walter J. Travis’ famed 1922 design, features the best field in the tournament’s recent history.

Defending champion Jim Rutledge of Victoria looks to defend his title (and win his third championship since 2010), but faces stiff competition from the best senior golfers in the country.

"I look forward to coming back to try and defend my title at the Mr. Lube PGA Senior's Championship of Canada presented by Adams Golf," said Rutledge. "Playing for a national title means a lot to me and I look forward to seeing many of my old friends again at Lookout Point Country Club."

Among those looking to dethrone Rutledge include hometown favourite and Champions Tour winner (2010 AT&T Championship), Rod Spittle.

“I’m very excited to once again play for a national championship at the Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada presented by Adams Golf,” Spittle said. “The opportunity to play in front of my friends and family near my hometown and play a great classic course in Lookout Point Country Club is a real treat.”

Past champions Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling Golf Academy); Ray Stewart; Hocan Olsson (Mount Bruno Country Club); Gar Hamilton (Mississaugua Golf & Country Club); Ken Fulton and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Bob Panasik all look to once again win the national championship.

Other notable players in the field include former European Senior’s Tour player Dave Wettlaufer (Goodwood Golf Club); last year’s Super Senior’s winner Norm Jarvis (Eaglequest Golf Centre at Coyote Creek); Terry Miskolczi; three-time Super Seniors’ winner Bob Breen; former PGA Tour Canada winner Arden Knoll; PGA Championship of Canada quarter-finalist Marc Girouard (Club de Golf Diamont); the National Golf Club’s Keir Smith (who along with Tarling, Rutledge and Spittle played in this year’s Senior Open Championship), six-time PGA Tour Canada winner Daniel Talbot (Centre De Pratique De Golf Sports Montreal), former PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada winners Ian Doig (Ian Doig Golf Academy) and Brian Hutton.

Five-time PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada winner Bill Kozak will be on hand at Lookout Point Country Club to hit a ceremonial tee shot during Wednesday’s first round at 9:50 am. The 90-year-old Kozak is a PGA of Canada Life Professional and joined the association in 1955. He’s also a longtime Lookout Point Country Club member.

The PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada was first played in 1938 as a division of the Canadian PGA Championship. In 1973, the Seniors' Championship became an independent event and has stayed that way ever since. Among the Canadian golf legends to win this championship are Stan Leonard, Moe Norman, Bob Panasik, Al Balding and Jim Rutledge. Norman won this championship a record seven straight years from 1979 to 1985, while Balding stunned the golf world by winning the championship at age 76 in 2000.
