Stellar Field for PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada Taking Shape

While the start of the Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada presented by Adams Golf is still more than a week away, the stellar field has already begun to take shape.

Defending champion (and two-time winner) Jim Rutledge of Victoria will be challenged by a number of the best professional senior golfers in Canada Aug. 6-9 at Lookout Point Country Club in Fonthill, Ont.

Among those looking to capture this year’s championship include hometown favourite and Champions Tour winner Rod Spittle. Past champions Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling Golf Academy); Ray Stewart; Hocan Olsson (Mount Bruno Country Club); Gar Hamilton (Mississaugua Golf & Country Club); Ken Fulton and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Bob Panasik all look to once again win the national championship.

Other notable players in the field include former European Senior’s Tour player Dave Wettlaufer (Goodwood Golf Club); last year’s Super Senior’s winner Norm Jarvis (Eaglequest Golf Centre at Coyote Creek); Terry Miskolczi; Darryl James (National Golf Academy at Shaganappi Golf Club); PGA Championship of Canada quarter-finalist Marc Girouard (Club de Golf Diamont); the National Golf Club’s Keir Smith (who along with Tarling with play in this year’s Senior Open Championship), six-time PGA Tour Canada winner Daniel Talbot (Centre De Pratique De Golf Sports Montreal), former PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada winners Ian Doig (Ian Doig Golf Academy) and Brian Hutton.

The Mr. Lube PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada presented by Adams Golf takes place Aug. 6-9 and is contested over 54 holes. The Super Seniors' (60 and older) division is contested over 36 holes in two days.

Five-time PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada winner Bill Kozak will be on hand at Lookout Point Country Club to his a ceremonial tee shot during Wednesday’s first round. The 90-year-old Kozak is a PGA of Canada Life Professional joined the association in 1955. He’s also a longtime Lookout Point Country Club member.

The PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada was first played in 1938 as a division of the Canadian PGA Championship. In 1973, the Seniors' Championship became an independent event and has stayed that way ever since. Among the Canadian golf legends to win this championship are Stan Leonard, Moe Norman, Bob Panasik, Al Balding and Jim Rutledge. Norman won this championship a record seven straight years from 1979 to 1985, while Balding stunned the golf world by winning the championship at age 76 in 2000.
