Shepley Strikes at PGA Women’s Championship of Canada

Jessica Shepley captured her second PGA Women’s Championship of Canada presented by Nike Golf Thursday at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ont.

The 30-year old Oakville, Ont., native, who won her first PGA Women’s Championship of Canada in 2009, put together a two-day score of 8-under par, 136, besting two-time defending champ Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Ont.

“I had a rough year last year and kind of decided to pack it in, but I made the decision to come back and it’s been a nice reward for a couple months of hard work,” Shepley said after her round. “This win definitely feels different than the first one did and that’s a good thing.”

Shepley’s final round 71 included four bogeys and five birdies. Her biggest birdie of the day came on the 374-yard par-4 14th hole.

“I was getting a little nervous at that point in the round,” Shepley admitted. “But I ended up hitting a great 5-iron up there to about three feet and sinking the putt,” she says, adding, “so it was pretty good momentum going into the last few holes.”

Shepley would add another birdie on No. 16 before making bogey on 17 and 18.

Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., and Kelowna B.C.’s, Samantha Richdale finished at 5 under and tied for third. Team Canada member Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., and 2010 winner Laura Bavaird of Grosse-Ile, Mich., rounded out the top five at 4-under. Jill Briles-Hinton of Richmond, Va., and Natalie Gleadall of Stratford, Ont., finished at 3-under, while Hamilton, Ont.’s, Ashley Sholer and Danielle Mills of Point-Claire, Que., rounded out the top 10 at 2-under.

Marchand’s efforts solidified her spot atop the Amateur Division, with Maggie Trainor of Dundas Valley Golf & Curling Club capturing the PGA of Canada Club Professional Division.

The PGA Women's Championship of Canada was first played in 1987 and past champions include Cathy Sherk, Gail Graham, Nancy Harvey, Lorie Kane and Shepley.
