The PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf started as 64 PGA of Canada professionals Tuesday morning but by Friday afternoon, only one could call himself the champion.
After four days and six grueling rounds of match play golf, Seymour Creek Golf Centre’s Bryn Parry stood alone hoisting the historic P.D. Ross trophy high above his head.
“It’s pretty surreal, isn’t it,” Parry said after the match. “It’s very cool that we get to play for this trophy—the names who are on it are the legends of golf,” he says, adding, “this was my year, my time and it will be a lot of fun to think about all the cool memories from this week.”
In Friday morning’s semi-final match, Parry took down Brian McCann (BraeBen Academy/Bradlee Ryall Golf) 4&2 before dispatching Fairtree Golf Centre’s Billy Walsh 2-up in the afternoon’s final match.
The Parry and Walsh tight final match was highlighted by 9 birdies between the pair. However, none were bigger than Parry’s improbable three on the drivable 15th.
“I had about a 45-footer up the hill for eagle, but I hit it a little hard and it didn’t take the break, so it ran off the green,” Parry admitted. “So, I’ve got about 25 feet left for birdie, and probably like 10 of those feet are through sticky fringe, so I rammed it up the hill and it went it.”
Walsh admitted that he was surprised Parry’s putt dropped on 15, especially after his eagle attempt was so far off the mark.
“When I saw him putt it off the green I was just going to lag it down there and make my birdie,” Walsh says. “I saw him with 25 feet and I’m thinking ‘OK, I got him, we’re all square going to 16 and momentum was in my favour,’” he says, adding, “and then it went in and it hurt.”
With the championship win, Parry not only takes home the P.D. Ross Trophy and an $15,000 paycheque, but also earns enough PGA of Canada Player Rankings points to leapfrog Brian McCann and take over the No. 1 spot.
With his ranking, Parry earns an exemption into next month’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.
“It’s going to be a really cool experience,” Parry says. “I guess I’m going to have to go home, think about it and start preparing because it wasn’t on my playing schedule until this afternoon.”
In the consolation match, McCann beat Louis-Pierre Godin 2-up.
