The Four Horsemen

After another grueling day of national championship golf, four players remain at the PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf.

Brian McCann (The BraeBen Academy/Bradlee Ryall Golf), Bryn Parry (Seymour Golf Centre), Billy Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) and Louis-Pierre Godin (Ki-8-Eb Golf Club) each won their respective bracket Thursday at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont., and are now just two wins away from capturing the historic P.D. Ross trophy.

“I think this is just an absolute great golf course,” Walsh said about this week’s host venue, Magna Golf Club. “I’ve played in a lot of golf tournaments over the years and this by far is the best setup I’ve ever seen—the greens are immaculate, the conditioning is just phenomenal—so what’s not to love about this place,” he says, adding, “in my opinion this is the best club in the country.”

In the Stan Leonard bracket, McCann, who is ranked No. 1 on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC, took down Dan Greenwood (Heron Point Golf Links) 2&1. Over in the Al Balding bracket Parry was victorious over Marc Girouard (Club de Golf Diamont) 2&1, while in the George Knudson bracket Walsh topped Brian Hadley (Thames Valley Golf Club) 4 & 3 and in the Moe Norman bracket, Godin bested Dan Talbot 4&3.

Friday’s semi-final matches—Parry versus McCann and Godin versus Walsh—are slated to take place at 8 and 8:15 a.m. The championship’s final goes down at 1 p.m. at Magna Golf Club.

The McCann and Parry match is extra intriguing as the winner will potentially earn enough points at week’s end to land the No. 1 spot atop the PGA of Canada Player Rankings pile and walk away from Magna with an exemption into next month’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.

“I’ve got my work cut out for me,” McCann says about his match against Parry. “He hits it longer than I do and we both hit it straight,” he says, adding “every match I’ve played this week, the guys I’ve played have holed putts, but maybe it’s my time to hole some putts.”
