Starter's Shack - By the Numbers

Starter's Shack - By the Numbers

Before we get into the real meat of this blog, let me just get this out of the way: I’m not a numbers guy. My pal Jeff Dykeman on the other hand is a numbers guy. But his brain is precariously close to overheating at all times, so . . .

My understanding of numbers is pretty simple and basically all I know is when I see a bunch of sixes on my scorecard, chances are it won’t add up to anything that will lower my factor.

So with the help of the PGA of Canada’s crackerjack research team (read: LeBrun, Adam; Dykeman, Jeff), I’ve compiled a bunch of numbers about next week’s PGA Championship of Canada at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont. Some of these numbers are big, while others are small, but all interesting.

0—The number of times the No. 1 seed has made it past the second round

6—The number of matches a player must win to capture the championship title

7—Birdies in a row by John McCann in his second round loss last year to Edd Boudreau

8—The number of times Stan Leonard won the PGA Championship of Canada

10—The number of horse paintings adorning the walls of Manga’s clubhouse

12—The time freshly baked cookies arrive in the locker room

19—Number of players from Ontario

22—The age of the youngest competitor, Brennan Rumancik

23—The number of times since 2011 a match has reached the 18th hole

25—The number of holes it took Ian Doig to win his first round match against John Rushnell in 2012

26 and 31—The seeds of the past two champions, Vincent Dumouchel and Eric Laporte

32—Acres of fairways at Magna Golf Club

50—Number of people who work on Magna Golf Club’s maintenance staff

51—Brad Clapp’s seed last year when he made it to the semi-finals

61—The age of the oldest competitor, Scott Knapp

64—The number of players in the championship
