PGA Assistants’ Championship Headed to Saskatoon

For the first time in the championship’s 43-year history, the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy will be played in the province of Saskatchewan.

The Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon hosts the national championship Sept. 9-12 and the club’s head golf professional says he is thrilled about the opportunity to entertain some of Canada’s best golfers.

“The Willows Golf and Country Club is thrilled to host the 2013 PGA of Canada Assistants’ Championship presented by Titleist & FootJoy,” says the Willows Golf and Country Club’s Head Professional, Brennen Gee. “It’s been a number of years since Saskatchewan last hosted a PGA of Canada championship and we look forward to showcasing our golf course, our facility and our city to a national audience.”

Named PGA of Saskatchewan Facility of the Year in 2010, 2011, and 2012, the Willows is characterized as a rolling dunes style golf course with numerous lakes and strategically placed bunkers.

“The Willows is not the type of course that is going to beat you up all day and it will not favour one type of player, but it does require quality shots and proper course management to score well,” Gee says. “The fairest comment that can be made of the Willows is that in tournament play, the course has consistently identified the players who have played the best.”

Royal Mayfair Golf Club’s Mike Belbin looks to become the champion for the third-straight year, after hoisting the trophy at Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, Ont., in 2011 and last year at Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club in Jasper, Alta. However, the field at the Willows will be impressive, making the task for the No. 2-ranked player from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC to three-peat a difficult one.

“Throughout the years the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy has consistently featured an impressive field of players from across the country and I expect this year to be no different,” says the PGA of Canada’s Managing Director of Championships, Adam LeBrun. “We’re excited to be taking the championship to a great golf course and a great city.”

Saskatoon is one of Canada’s premier tourism destinations, famous for the stunning South Saskatchewan River and the warmth and welcome of its people. Nicknamed ‘The Hub City’ for its transportation connections, Saskatoon is known for its expansive parklands, admired for its arts and culture scene, festivals and major sporting events and boasts the rare combination of big city amenities and small town hospitality.
