National Award Winners Honoured

National Award Winners Honoured

The PGA of Canada handed out its 2012 National Awards last week at Canada Night in Orlando Fla., as part of the PGA Merchandise Show.

More than 300 guests, including PGA of Canada members, Association sponsors and partners, and Canadian golf media members were on hand to celebrate the winners.

“It’s just amazing having this many people here tonight congratulating and honouring all the National Award winners,” says PGA of Canada President, Gregg Schubert. “There’s a definite buzz in the room and as President of the Association, it makes very proud to be a PGA of Canada member.”

Taking home hardware on the night were Eric Laporte, Mike Weir Player of the Year; Shaun Piercey, Pat Fletcher Retailer of the Year; Andrew Steep, Moe Norman Apprentice of the Year; Cam Martens, George Knudson Teacher of the Year; Doug Lawrie, Jack McLaughlin Junior Leader of the Year; Jon Roy, Ben Kern Coach of the Year; Trevor Goplin, Murray Tucker Golf Professional of the Year; Mike Kelly, Tex Noble Award for Professional Development; and Lorne Rubenstein, George Cumming Distinguished Service Award.

“It is a huge honour being recognized at Canada Night,” says Steep. “Up on that stage, with the rest of the award winners, is truly something special and I won’t soon be forgetting it.”

The Winnipeg native obviously wasn’t the only National Award winner pleased with the evening.

“It feels great and fantastic,” Roy admits. “To be recognized by all my peers and by the Association is fantastic and it makes me as happy as when any of the kids who I coach win a tournament.”

Each year, a National Selection committee evaluates nominations from more than 3,800 PGA of Canada members from coast-to-coast and recognizes winners in each of the categories.
