The PGA Remembers . . .
OGLE, William Melville - Born January 14, 1914 at Renton, Scotland. Died at home in West Hill on November 13, 2012.
Bill immigrated to Canada in 1925 with his mother, brother and four sisters to join their father at their new home in Toronto.
He began an illustrious career in golf at Glen Stewart and turned pro at age 18. He worked at a series of courses including Cliffside and Rouge Hills, where he was the pro until 1970.
His golfing career was interrupted when he joined the RCAF in 1941 and served with distinction as a flight officer attached to RAF Bomber Command. He organized a golf team among the members of 12th squadron. During his time overseas, he maintained his membership with the PGA of Canada and is to date their longest continuous member.
In 1947, he married the love of his life, Evelyn. They had 5 children, Cathy (Richard), David (Linda), Alan (Heather), Bill Jr. (Diane) and Sandy (Gloria), 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
With Wilson Paterson, Bill designed and built Thunderbird Golf Course, now Royal Ashburn. He was a partner there until he retired in 1985. Bill and Evelyn celebrated 65 years of marriage on November 10, 2012.
After Mom, Dad loved and was most proud of his family, we felt the same of him. Viewing on Sunday, November 18th at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Ave. E., from 12 to 2 p.m. Service in the Chapel to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dad's name to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
