Starter's Shack—Who Knew?

Today’s random, ‘Did You Know?’ fun fact of the day comes courtesy of the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.

According to the website, Gary Bernard was recently selected (by fan interactive voting in combination with a committee voting process) to the Second Team 1970’s All Decade team.

Yes, current PGA of Canada CEO, Gary Bernard is the same Gary Bernard who played goal for the Varsity Reds from 1974-1979. Who knew?

I have heard a few tales (from various independent sources who shall remain nameless) about Bernard’s prowess in the crease back in the day, but I had no idea he was a legitimate university hockey superstar.

Here’s what current UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey head coach, Gardiner MacDougall had to say about ‘70’s All Decade Team: “We are very pleased to recognize the efforts and performance levels of our 1970's team – it is an established UNB Hockey motto that we play for those who passed through our program.”

Next time you’re looking for a call-up goalie for your Tuesday night men’s team, don’t bother calling Bernard, though—he hasn’t strapped on the pads since March of 1979. If you’re playing a nice game of street hockey, however, Bernard’s your guy.
