Helping Hands

The Soviet Union men’s hockey team was supposed to steam roll their way to a Gold Medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. Since being upset by the Americans in 1960 Olympics, the Soviets had a record 27-1-1 in Olympics competition, outscoring their opponents 175-44 and in the process, won Gold Medals in 1964, ’68, ’72 and ’76.

During the Olympic tournament in 1980, they cruised through group play, but in the medal round, they faced off against the Americans. What happened over the next 60 minutes at the Olympic Centre in Lake Placid would forever be known as the “Miracle on Ice.”

Individually, the Americans coudln’t hold a candle to the talented roster of the Soviets, but collectively, head coach Herb Brooks built a group who were the better cohesive unit and got the job done together.

Earlier this year, Dean Ingalls was named the 2011 Pat Fletcher Merchandiser of the Year Award winner. But like great leaders tend to do, he attributes his success to the great team he’s built around him.

“I’ve got such a great group of people here,” the Pinebrook Golf & Country Club Head Professional says. “Everyone is really committed to success and involved in the process of having a great shop.”

For the past six or seven years, a fairly consistent core group of people has worked in the shop at Pinebrook, which the 20-year PGA of Canada member says has paid dividends.

“With pretty much the same staff from year-to-year, we’re able to build relationships with not only our members, but with corporate Calgary as well,” Ingalls says.

Ingalls admits that for nearly the past decade, he and his team at Pinebrook have been working towards being recognized as the Zone winner, with the hopes of maybe one day earning the national honour as well.

But now that Pinebrook has been honoured, where do Ingalls and his team go from here? Apparently, right back to the start.

“If you can actually believe it, we’re in the midst of gutting our entire pro shop right now,” he admits. “Every seven years we replace the carpet in the building so we thought it would be a good opportunity to renovate.”

Once completed, Pinebrook’s pro shop will look drastically different, Ingalls assures.

“We’re creating more of an open concept look with an island counter,” he says. “Another wall will be freed up and there will just be more retail space in general,” adding, “it’s going to improve how things are showcased in the shop and that’s exciting.”

Herb Brooks returned to the bright lights of the Olympics at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, coaching a skilled team of American (NHL) players to a Silver Medal. If history is any indication, it won’t take 22 years for Dean Ingalls to yet again be recognized as a leader in the PGA of Canada.

“I’m always working, always thinking, always building,” Ingalls says. “I just want to get better at what I do and hopefully help the people around me get better too.”
