You take one look at Brian Dagg’s online PGA of Canada profile and it’s pretty apparent he’s got a lot of things going on. Husband; father; pet owner; Jets fan; recent Class “A” professional; two-time PGA of Manitoba Assistant of the Year winner.

Did I mention he’s the 2011 Moe Norman Apprentice of the Year, too?

“It was a pretty big honour winning the Manitoba Zone award first of all,” Dagg admits. “So when Glenn (Cundari) called and told me that I won the National award, I was completely floored.”

For a guy who’s just 24, the Pine Ridge Golf Club Assistant Professional has been paying his dues in the golf industry for the better part of a decade.

“When I was 14, I worked at John Blumberg Golf Course on the maintenance staff,” Dagg says. “I had every intention of one day being a superintendent.”

A few years later though, Dagg went from riding TriPlex mowers to working inside the bustling golf shop—a move he says turned out for the best.

“I had the opportunity to try something different—go work inside the golf shop—and I absolutely loved the experience,” Dagg recalls of his time at one of Winnipeg’s busiest municipal tracks. “I learned so much being inside at Blumberg and even though it was so busy, I also had lots of opportunities to get out and play the game.”

The same year Dagg graduated high school, he turned professional and joined the PGA of Canada. He attended Red River College and graduated from the Business Administration program. All the while, he continued to work inside the golf shop at Blumberg, eventually becoming the course’s assistant professional.

While attending his first education seminar in Manitoba, Dagg says his future goals as a golf professional changed.

“During the seminar, Derek Ingram—who was the presenter—gave Michael Coghill the Zone Assistant of the Year award,” Dagg says. “And it was at that moment when I knew I wanted to be ‘that’ guy.”

Apparently moving over to Pine Ridge Golf Club as an Assistant Professional in 2010 helped Dagg becoming ‘that’ guy—with his back-to-back Zone awards and now the National honour.

At Pine Ridge, Dagg says he plays a major role in both corporate and club events.

He’s also a supporter of the CN Future Links program, putting through nearly 70 juniors in 2011.

Dagg credits everyone at Pine Ridge—from the General Manager, to the Head Golf Professional to the Board of Directors and Members of the club—for helping him become the professional he is.

“It’s such an understanding and terrific group of people at Pine Ridge,” Dagg says. “Basically, if it wasn’t for all of them, there is just no way I would be where I am today.”

Last year completed the road to becoming a Class “A” Professional, passing the exam with a mark of 95 per cent. For all the help and guidance he’s received from others over the years, this one is entirely on him.

“It’s my ultimate goal to be at the top of the profession,” Dagg says of his impressive Class “A” marks. “

Like I said, he’s got a lot going on.

Dagg, along with the other 2011 PGA of Canada National Award winners will be honoured later this year.
