Back on the Hill

The PGA of Canada’s CEO Gary Bernard will be in the nation’s capital Thursday as part of the National Allied Golf Associations (NAGA) Golf Awareness Campaign.

Bernard—who is NAGA’s current chair— along with Jeff Calderwood, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association of Canada (NGCOA), will meet with Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) in the morning on Parliament Hill.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us at NAGA to be able to meet with the Minister,” Bernard says. “He’s a very busy man, so the fact that we’re getting a little face time is a very good thing.”

Following the meeting with the Minister, Bernard and Calderwood will head to the Parliamentary Restaurant for the Golf Caucus lunch with a number of MPs.

The pair plans to highlight golf’s impact on Canada’s economy, participation rates, golf courses as environmental stewards and the unfair tax treatment for golf in Canada.

“It’s very important to really let the MPS know that NAGA’s message is about a sustainable and healthy golf industry for all the involved associations,” Bernard says. “We made great strides earlier this season with our Golf Lobby Days and this Golf Caucus lunch will continue to build momentum for our cause.”

NAGA is comprised by seven different Canadian golf associations—the PGA of Canada; Canadian Society of Club Managers; Canadian Superintendents Association; Canadian Tour; Golf Canada National Golf Course Owners Association of Canada and the Canadian Golf Industry Association.
