PGA of Canada Announces 2011 Scholarship Winners

(ACTON, ON) August 31, 2011: As summer draws to a close and students prepare to head back to school, the PGA of Canada and the Board of Directors congratulate the recipients of the 2011 PGA of Canada Scholarship.

Since 1994, the PGA of Canada has awarded scholarships to Members, Apprentices and Candidates for Membership, as well as the children and grandchildren of members in an effort to encourage, support and promote higher education.

Scholarships are awarded to recipients based on academic achievement and contributions to their community. A total of seven individuals will benefit from the scholarship fund this year, giving each of them $2,000 toward their education. The PGA of Canada would like to recognize the Personal Group, and Rachel Corbett from the Sport Law & Strategy Group as proud partners of the scholarship award.

Congratulations to the following recipients:
1. Kyle Paquette: PGA of Canada Apprentice at Golf Association of Ontario
2. Kowan O’Keefe: Son of Brian O’Keefe of Blind Bay, BC
3. Robert Stewart: Son of Bill Stewart of Kitchener, ON
4. Kristen Sovereign: Daughter of Rick Sovereign of Mississauga, ON
5. Taylor Jackson: Daughter of Tom Jackson of Collingwood, ON
6. Jenna Jackson: Daughter of Tom Jackson of Collingwood, ON
7. Lauren Brescacin: PGA of Canada Member at Country Hill Golf Club

PGA of Canada Apprentice, Kyle Paquette, is a three-time recipient of the PGA of Canada Scholarship (09,10,11). Kyle is a professional member of the Canadian Sports Psychology Association and is currently working as the Sports Psychology Coach for Ontario’s High Performance Team. Kyle is currently completing the second year of his PhD in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa specializing in the psychosocial sciences of sport, physical activity and health with a primary focus on developing the sport of golf in Canada. In 2008, Kyle was awarded both the Northern Ontario PGA “Assistant of the Year” and “Teacher of the Year” award.

This is the second time that Kowan O’Keefe has been awarded a PGA of Canada scholarship to assist him in continuing his education. Kowan is currently attending his second year at Minot State University in North Dakota in the Biology (pre-medicine) program. Kowan is a member of the Minot State golf team and was awarded the 2010 Athletic Director’s Academic Achievement Award and is a member of the President’s Honour Roll.

Robert Stewart is a first time winner of the PGA of Canada Scholarship. Robert will be attending Confederation College in Thunder Bay this fall enrolled in the Police Foundations program. Robert graduated from Sir John A MacDonald Secondary School in Waterloo, Ontario and has dedicated over 900 hours volunteering with a number of non-profit organizations. Robert has a keen interest in helping others especially youth and was nominated and elected to the Kitchener Youth Action Council.

This is the third consecutive year that Kristen Sovereign has received the PGA of Canada Scholarship Award. Kirsten will be entering her third year at the University of Western Ontario at the Richard Ivey School of Business. During the summer Kirsten worked as an accounting intern at Golf Canada. Kirsten has maintained high academic standards while at university and was granted the 2010 University of Western Faculty Association Scholarship, awarded to students who have exhibited leading academic performance in their program.

This is the second year that Taylor Jackson has received the PGA of Canada Scholarship Award. Taylor will continue her education at Florida State University pursuing a degree in nursing. Taylor has maintained a 3.7GPA and is on the Dean’s list at FSU. She is a representative of the Florida State Alumni Association and the National Honour Society. Taylor also volunteers with children with special needs.

Jenna Jackson, younger sister of Taylor Jackson, is a first time recipient of the PGA of Canada Scholarship Award. Jenna will begin her freshman year at Florida State University in the Retail Merchandising and Product Development Program. While in high school Jenna was awarded the 2008 Young Entrepreneur of the Year as a result of the success of her jewelry business. She was also awarded the French Award and was President of the National Honour Society.

Lauren Brescacin is a member of the PGA of Canada and a first time recipient of the PGA of Canada Scholarship Award. Lauren is a graduate of the Golf Club Management and Operations Program at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC. After several years working in the golf industry, Lauren has decided to further her education and is currently pursuing an advanced diploma in Marketing from Confederation College in her hometown of Thunder Bay. Lauren will enter her third year of the program this fall. She is looking forward to improving her game and furthering her career in the golf industry. Lauren was a member of the Selkirk golf team, served as Class President and was awarded the 2005 Female Athlete of the Year from Selkirk.
