Brian McCann Shoots 66 to Win the 2010 Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Assistant’s Championship

VICTORIA, BC (September 30th, 2010) – In what looked like a heavyweight fight the entire day, it seemed like a fitting ending with both Brian McCann of Mississauga, ON and Bryn Parry of North Vancouver, BC going down swinging until the final putt. In the end it was McCann, Teaching Professional at the Academy of BraeBen, who fired a scorching final round 6-under 66 to win the Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Assistant’s Championship presented by Simmlands Insurance by two shots over Parry.

“I got off to such a good start that I kept thinking that today might be the day to turn my entire year around,” said McCann, who joined the Canadian PGA Apprentice Program in 2010 after spending a number of years in the Association’s Tournament Player Division on the Nationwide Tour & Canadian Tour. “Bryn is such a good player and I think I played as well as I did because I knew I had to have a great round just to beat him.”

McCann played nearly flawless golf all week long, making sixteen birdies and only two bogies the entire week. In addition, McCann only missed three greens in regulation all week and didn’t hit his ball into a bunker until the last hole of the tournament.

“It still really hasn’t sunk in how awesome this is,” stated McCann who had to race to the airport with his $9,000 dollars in winnings to catch a flight back to Toronto. “I’ve won some big events in the past but to win a Canadian PGA National Championships surrounded by my peers is something else and I’m really proud of it.”

McCann started the day two shots behind Parry but came storming out of the gates with birdies on four of the first six holes. Believe it or not it still wasn’t enough to catch Parry though as Bryn made three birdies of his own on those same six holes to stay ahead of McCann by a single shot.

The turning point seemed to be the last stretch of holes on the back nine as Parry made bogies on the 12th and 15th holes and McCann made birdies on the 13th and 16th holes to go from one shot behind to three shots ahead going into the final hole.

“I had a bunch of uncharacteristic miss hits today that I usually don’t have to worry about when I play,” said Parry, who will tee it up at PGA Tour Qualifying School in Hawaii this fall. “Brian played awesome golf today and he deserved it. He played exactly how I thought I was going to play today and I was happy to congratulate him after the round for getting the job done.”

There was a logjam of five players tied for 3rd place when the final putts dropped. Dave Levesque of Georgetown, ON, Phil Jonas of Surrey, BC, Jamie Kureluk of Calgary, AB and Ed Maunder of Whitby, ON all took home $2,875.00 for the fine play all week. Levesque moved up the most out of that group with a 6-under par 66 in the final round, a score that was equaled by McCann, Reg Millage of Milton, ON and Brad Clapp of Kamloops, BC.
Defending champion Matt Palsenbarg of Surrey, BC made another jump up the leaderboard in the final round with a 2-under par round of 70 to finish in a tie for 10th.

Gorge Vale Golf Club Assistant Professional Germain Francoeur of Victoria, BC played another steady round of golf, a 2-under par 70, to finish tied for 10th place with Palsenbarg and Shingo Akizuki of Richmond, BC.
