Jim Rutledge Catches Fire and Sets Course Record at the Mr. Lube – Canadian PGA Seniors’

(Milton, ON) July 7, 2010 – Champions Tour player Jim Rutledge of Victoria, BC fired a scorching hot round of 10-under-par 62 to break away from the entire field and set a new course record in the second round of the Mr. Lube – Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon.

Rutledge is certainly making some noise at RattleSnake Point in Milton, ON in his Canadian PGA Seniors’ debut. After entertaining the crowd at the Mr. Lube – Legends of Golf Clinic on Monday, he’s now entertaining the media and his peers with an astonishing 15-under-par total of 129 for the Championship after 36 holes.

“I got off to a great start today after making birdies on four of the first six holes and that seemed to get me off to the races,” said Rutledge, winner of the 1984 Canadian PGA Championship. “I’ve seen all the Canadian legends on that trophy and while I’m taking it one day at a time I would love to add my name to it when it’s all over tomorrow.”

Rutledge’s record setting round included eight birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th hole. He had opportunities for two more birdies on the way in on the 17th and 18th holes but just missed draining both putts to do so. When it was all said and done he signed for a front nine of 30 and a back nine of 32.

Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Dave Barr of Kelowna, BC played alongside Rutledge and finally saw some of his putts drop en route to a second round score of 5-under-par 67. Barr has literally hit nearly every green in regulation over the past few weeks on the Champions Tour and here at the Canadian PGA Seniors’ but he’s still waiting to see the fruits of his labour on the greens.

“I was feeling pretty good about myself today getting it to 5-under-par but I was steamrolled by Rutledge and came up five shots short of him,” joked Barr, who is still debating a return to Champions Tour Qualifying School this fall. “It was nice to see some of those putts go in the hole, I’ve been making everything I look at on the putting green but I will need them to drop on the golf course to compete with the best players in the world like I used to.”

Ken Tarling of Sanford, ON fired a 3-under-par 69 and rounded out the day’s hottest pairing with Rutledge and Barr as the three players combined for a total of 19 birdies in the second round alone.

Rod Spittle of Niagara Falls, ON and Daryl Stubbs of South Delta, BC are tied for 3rd place at 4-under-par for the Championship. Spittle will join the final pairing with Rutledge and Barr while Stubbs will play in the penultimate group alongside 2010 Ontario PGA Senior standout Rick Willian and Tarling.

In the Super Seniors Division Don Green of Thornbury, ON outlasted Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Bob Panasik of Windsor, ON after making par on the first playoff hole. Both competitors will play again tomorrow to compete for the overall Seniors’ title.

Bobby Breen of Brampton, ON adds the Diamond Division title to his very large trophy case after firing rounds of 73-76 to win by six shots over Don Renaud of Ottawa, ON.

“This is the first event I’ve played in all year because of my health and I was really excited to see some of the guys again and play some competitive golf,” stated Breen, who plans on playing with the young guys again in 2011. “It always means a lot to me to play in this event and I’m thrilled to win that National Championship.”

The $50,000 Mr. Lube - Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke play event. The Super Seniors’ (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) divisions were contested over 36 holes in two days.
