Canada Heads To Japan For Toyota Junior World Golf Championship

Oakville, Ont. (Golf Canada) - Opening Round tee times have been set for the Toyota 2010 Junior Golf World Cup, beginning Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. (Monday 7:00 p.m. EDT) in Toyota City, Japan.
National Development Squad members Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., Richard Jung of Toronto, Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. and Albin Choi of Toronto are paired with defending champion Argentina and host nation Japan in the opening-round’s first groups. Svensson tees off at 8:00 a.m. (Monday 7:00 p.m. EDT), while the rest of the squad will follow in separate threesomes every ten minutes.
Denmark, Thailand and the United States follow in the second group, while the third wave of teams includes Australia, Columbia and South Africa. Germany, Guatemala and India will be in the first rounds final groupings.
The event will be played for the sixth-consecutive year at the 6,942-yard, par 71 Chukyo Golf Club’s Ishino Course, where Canada is one of the 14 countries competing for the coveted Toyota Cup.
Canada’s Development Squad members earned their chance to compete in Japan after finishing first in the regional qualifier at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan, Mexico in April.
“We are proud to have these four players representing our country on the international stage,” said Doug Roxburgh, Golf Canada’s Director of High Performance. “After their tremendous finish at the zone qualifier, we are sure to see some exciting play from these individuals at the World Junior Golf Team Championship.”
Henry Brunton, the National Men’s Squad head coach and Robert Laing, Canada’s team captain for the event will accompany the athletes. “We have a very strong team who are a very cohesive group,” said Brunton. “They are focused on getting to the podium in Japan and are very capable of doing so. We have been working hard preparing for this event and look forward to making our nation proud.”
Canada looks to build on its last showing at the championship when the team finished 12th. In 16 years of competing in the event, Canada has seven top-5 finishes, with their best result coming in 1994 when Team Canada took home runner-up honours.
The World Junior Golf Team Championship is the world’s only junior golf championship in which 14 national teams who qualify through regional qualifiers held across six continents compete for the world championship trophy. The competition consists of four rounds of stroke play. Individual and team champions will be named after Friday’s final round.
